Tribunal congratulates incoming Competition Commissioner and first woman to head the institution, Ms Doris Tshepe

  14 June 2022

The Competition Tribunal congratulates Ms Doris Tshepe on her appointment as Competition Commissioner with effect from September 2022.

Ms Tshepe, whose appointment was announced by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Ebrahim Patel, will be the first woman to head the Commission since its establishment over two decades ago.

“The work of the Commission is pivotal in the development of a growing and inclusive economy that serves all South Africans. Ms Tshepe has an exceptional track record and brings a tremendous amount of experience in the field of competition law and policy, having acted for the Competition Commission and private sector clients in competition matters. Among others, she is widely recognised for her role on an advisory panel on the amendments to the Competition Act signed into law in 2019. We wish her every success as she leads the Commission into its next chapter in a seamless transition, building on the phenomenal work of her predecessor, Commissioner Tembinkosi Bonakele, from September 2022,” said the Tribunal Chairperson, Ms Mondo Mazwai.

“It is also fitting that Ms Tshepe will take up the reins immediately after Women’s month, when South Africans reflect on the significant role that women have played and continue to play in our society,” added Ms Mazwai, who was the first black South African and first woman to be appointed to head the Tribunal in August 2019.

Ms Tshepe will succeed Commissioner Bonakele who has served the Commission for 18 years, including nine years at the helm as Competition Commissioner. “Commissioner Bonakele has been an iconic leader in the development of competition law and policy in South Africa and globally. On behalf of the Tribunal, we extend our gratitude and best wishes to Commissioner Bonakele for the remainder of his tenure and every success for the future,” concluded Ms Mazwai.
