Tribunal approves Remgro Healthcare Holdings’ acquisition of Mediclinic International, subject to employment-related conditions

The Competition Tribunal has approved, subject to employment-related conditions, the merger in which Remgro Healthcare Holdings (Pty) Ltd (“RHH”) will acquire Mediclinic International (Pty) Ltd (“Mediclinic”). The transaction will result in RHH moving from joint control to sole control of Mediclinic.

RHH is a wholly owned subsidiary of Remgro Ltd (“Remgro”), a firm listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The acquiring group (comprising RHH, Remgro and firms controlled by Remgro) is an investment holding group with interests across a range of sectors including healthcare, customer products, financial services, infrastructure and media. Through these investments, the group owns several firms in South Africa that are active in these industries.

Mediclinic is an international private healthcare services group with divisions in Switzerland, Southern Africa (South Africa and Namibia) and the Middle East (the United Arab Emirates). In South Africa, Mediclinic controls several firms including Mediclinic Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd which operates a network of hospitals, sub-acute hospitals, mental health facilities and day-care clinics.
